Pundit predicts Man Utd will regret dumping de Gea for Onana

New Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been tipped by football pundit Richard Keys to fare badly as Manchester United's new goalkeeper.

The 27-year-old has joined Erik ten Hag's side in a £47m deal which was confirmed on Thursday - replacing David de Gea, whose contract at Old Trafford expired.

But while Spanish shot-stopper De Gea was known for making high-profile blunders between the sticks, Keys believes that Onana may be more of a risk than his predecessor.

Keys tweeted a link to Mail Sport's story on the Onana deal and added: 'I’ve got a horrible feeling this guy will cost United as many points in a season as De Gea used to save. This is a big call by Ten Hag.'

Onana has a good working relationship with Ten Hag from their time together at Dutch club Ajax, and the manager obviously believes that the Cameroonian goalkeeper is the right person to fix Man United's goalkeeper problem.

The 27-year-old Onana is particularly strong with the football at his feet, which was an area of weakness in De Gea's game during his many years in Manchester.

Ten Hag has set about strengthening his side during the summer window after Manchester United finished third in the Premier League table last season.

Onana could make his debut in a New Jersey friendly against Arsenal on Saturday, after flying out to the USA to join his new teammates.

Meanwhile, De Gea has reportedly turned down the prospect of replacing Onana at Inter Milan due to wage demands, with a return to Spain most likely, while offers from Saudi Arabian clubs are also thought to be in the pipeline.
