Eguma sacked as Rivers United coach as club plays draw against Kwara United on Thursday

One of the longest serving coaches in the NPFL Stanley Eguma has been sacked by the management of Nigeria Premier Football League side, Rivers United.

Eguma was sacked by the club immediately after Rivers United’s 2-1 defeat to Remo Stars last Sunday.

The experienced tactician was mandated by the club to win the game against Sky Blue Stars.

He left the Port Harcourt club in 13th position.

Eguma, nicknamed ‘Capelo’, guided the club to the 2021 NPFL title win, and equally led the Pride of Rivers to second place finish in the 2016 domestic top flight, their first in the NPFL after sponsors, Rivers State Government merged Sharks FC and Dolphins FC to form what’s today known as Rivers United FC.

His assistant Evan Ogenyi is now in charge of the team.

Ogenyi was on the bench in the 0-0 draw against Kwara United on Thursday.

Hosts Kwara United dominated the game but were unlucky not to score at least once. Kabiru Dogo’s men hit the woodwork four times.

The result did little favour to either side as they remained in the drop zone.

The two clubs are tied at 40 points each, three points adrift of the relegation zone.

Rivers United will now shift attention to their next rescheduled fixture against Sunshine Stars in Akure on Sunday.
