VIDEO: Ex-Barcelona star visits Super Eagles ahead of Egypt clash

The former Afcon winner was around to wish the Eagles well as they begin their campaign in Cameroon

The Super Eagles are all set to begin their campaign at the African Cup of Nations taking place in Cameroon today (Tuesday).

Ahead of the eagerly anticipated opening group game against the Pharaohs of Egypt, a former Barcelona player and former Nigeria international has visited the Super Eagles camp to wish the national team well.

In a recent interview, Amunike said he believes that the 2021 AFCON will be a tough tournament with Nigeria, host Cameroon, Senegal, Morocco and  Egypt in all contention for the title but he tipped reigning champion Algeria as favourites.

Amunike who won the 1994 AFCON title with Nigeria Super Eagles and was Tanzania’s coach in the 2019 edition in Egypt is a member of the Technical Study Group (TSG) of the coming TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021.

Amunike regrets the absence of Victor Oshimen in Cameroon but he is backing his former teammate, Augustine Eguavoen to lead the Eagles to a respectable outing.

He said “We would have liked to see players like Oshimen who is doing very well in a very tough league in Italy. But the most important in life is health and we pray he will regain his health very quickly. He will play other tournaments for his country and certainly the World Cup qualifying play-offs. Oshimen is a young footballer, but he is part of the present and future of Nigerian, African and world football. It’s sad not to see him at TotalEnergies AFCON, but he will be there soon. Despite everything, the selected players have a lot of quality. Nigeria will bravely defend their chances in this competition.”
