Dele Alli

Former football great Graeme Souness reckons Nigeria born Everton forward, Dele Alli is already in the ‘last chance saloon’ at Goodison Park.

And Souness has branded Alli a ‘mystery’ just one month after the midfielder’s shock transfer from Tottenham.

Alli, 25, was granted a January deadline day move to Everton just hours after Frank Lampard was confirmed as their new boss.

Despite the Toffees initially receiving the playmaker for free, Alli could end up costing his new side a whopping £30million through appearance and performance bonuses.

But he may not be around long enough for Spurs to cash in after seemingly failing to win Lampard over.

Alli is yet to start a single Premier League game for Everton since his January switch, with all six appearances coming from the bench.

And the 37-time England international, who hasn’t played for his country since 2019, was an unused sub in today’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham.

Everton are now staring down the barrel of relegation to the Championship, with Alli still no more than a bit-part player.

And hard-hitting pundit Souness isn’t sure whether Alli will even be around to experience the plight of the lower leagues.

Souness believes Alli has made such little impact on Merseyside that he is already on his final warning.

And should Everton boot Alli out after such a short period of time, the midfielder will find it hard to secure yet another prestigious club.

Souness said: “Dele Alli is a mystery to me. When he first broke into the team (at Spurs) I went thinking ‘he’s destined to be a top player’.

“He had a couple of years where he was good, getting goals, working his socks off for the team.

“But it’s just all evaporated. Lots of serious managers have looked at him and made their minds up on him.

“For me, if I was advising him, I’d be saying ‘you’re now in the last chance saloon.

“If it doesn’t work out for him at Everton, where does he go after that? It’s certainly not a big club.

“Everton are a big club, he should grab it with both hands. Whatever he’s doing, and only he can answer it, it’s one of two things.

“He’s had his eye taken off the ball for whatever reasons, [or] he’s lost interest in football, at his age, really?”
