Bayern will still release Tuchel even if wins the Champions League

Bayern Munich will not change their minds over sacking Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season – even if he leads them to the Champions League.

The German giants announced in February that Tuchel would step down in June after a disappointing domestic campaign where their 11-year reign as Bundesliga champions was ended by Bayer Leverkusen.

Tuchel remains highly regarded across Europe and is thought to be an option under consideration at Manchester United should Erik ten Hag be dismissed this summer.

Bayern opted to keep Tuchel in place rather than bring in an interim boss with the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain head coach leading his side into the Champions League semi-finals – eliminating Arsenal in the quarters despite a spate of injury problems.

An impressive second-half fightback saw Bayern rescue a 2-2 draw at home to Real Madrid on Tuesday night with Tuchel’s side now just 90 minutes away from reaching June’s final at Wembley.

Unimpressed with possible replacements, Bayern fans have petitioned for Bayern to retain Tuchel next season.

The club however are not considering a U-turn on its decision.

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said: ‘No. You have to assess the decision at the point in time it was made.

‘It was a different situation. Now we have another situation – our clear goal is to reach the final, then hopefully win the Champions League. We would all be happy together and then we go separate ways.’

With Xabi Alonso deciding to stay on at Leverkusen for at least another year, Bayern have turned their attention to Ralf Rangnick, with the former United interim boss in talks over a move to the Allianz Arena.

He is currently in charge of the Austria national team, leading them into the Euros in a group alongside Poland, France, and the Netherlands.
