Thirty years after being diagnosed with HIV Lakers legend Magic Johnson details how he has survived

NBA legend Magic Johnson is considered one of the best basketball players of all time: He was the main man of the 'Showtime' era for the Los Angeles Lakers and wrote some of the best chapters in NBA history with his legendary rivalry against Larry Bird's Boston Celtics during the 1980s.

However, Magic shocked the world when he announced he was HIV positive in 1991, ending his NBA career immediately and sparking rumors about his health, as at that time, being diagnosed with HIV or AIDS seemed like a 'death sentence.'

More than 30 years after his diagnosis, Magic Johnson is still going strong, and thanks to the medical advances we have seen over the last three decades, he has been able to live a healthy, fulfilling life despite the initial fear and the stigma that comes with HIV.

Magic recently spoke with People Magazine and shared how he has been able to remain healthy while living with HIV and growing older, as he is now 64.

Every time I go to the doctor and my T-cell count is off the charts, that's when I know I'm good. I'm stretching, and then I work out for two hours. Then I'm in the office all day, so as long I can continue, and I have been at that pace, it's been a blessing. So I've done my part, the medicine's done its part, and then my wife stays on me to make sure I'm doing my part.

After abruptly ending his NBA career due to his illness, Magic became a successful businessman and entrepreneur: He owns Magic Johnson Enterprises, worth $700 million, and has co-owns the Los Angeles Lakers since 2012.
