NPFL: Akwa United to sign four strikers as Sporting Lagos vows to bounce back

Nigeria Premier Football League side, Akwa United are set to beef up the team with four new attackers.

The Promise Keepers caretaker coach, Umar Abdullahi disclosed this in a chat with newsmen in Eket.

Abdullahi said the club aims to bring in quality players to improve the attacking department.

“When you watch Akwa United games you would see that we play well and couldn’t convert our chances,” he stated.

“We are going into the transfer market to bring in four quality forwards that will help the team improve that area.”

Akwa United have recorded four wins, six draws, and seven defeats in 17 games this season.

The former NPFL champions are 16th on the table with 18 points.

Elsewhere, Sporting Lagos coach Paul Offor is optimistic the team will return to winning ways in the Nigeria Premier Football League following their poor run in the topflight recently.

Their poor run of results saw them drop into the relegation zone on Sunday after losing 2-0 to Enyimba in a match-day 17 game in Aba.

Sporting Lagos made a dream start to life in the NPFL with a 2-0 home win against Gombe United in October and followed it up with a goalless draw against Akwa United in Uyo. However, they have only won four games so far this season, drawing five and losing seven.

After the defeat in Aba, Offor lamented injuries that have plagued his team this term.

“We shouldn’t be conceding the type of goals we are conceding right now. We started the season well and we were unfortunate with injuries. We had lots of injuries that gave us instability and we kept using different lineups and different setups as a way of adjusting to the situation,” Offor said.

“Fortunately, right now we have everybody and we have to start again. The players know our current position at the table is not helping us but as I told them during the break, they have to look away from the table, we have to look at ourselves and demand more from ourselves and get results, that’s the only way we can get out of where we are,” he added.

Offor’s side currently sit 18th on the table with 17 points after 16 games. They have an outstanding game against Rivers United.

The 35-year-old guided Sporting Lagos from the Nigeria National League to the NPFL last year, a few months after joining them from Cotonou-based Premier League club, Djeffa FC. Offor had also worked with Warri Wolves in the NNL.
