Chelsea fans took to Twitter to share their glee as news broke that Frank Lampard is back at the west London club and take charge for the remainder of the season.

Assistant coach Bruno Saltor was appointed interim manager in the wake of Graham Potter's sacking on Monday, but shortly after the Blues legend was spotted watching Chelsea's lacklustre 0-0 draw against Liverpool on Tuesday evening,

Sportsmail reported that Lampard would be given a second chance at Stamford Bridge.

The former Everton manager oversaw a strong third-place finish during the 2019/20 season, during which time he nurtured young talents – such as Mason Mount and Reece James – who benefitted from the club's two-window transfer ban.

But when his tenure ended in January 2021, Lampard left the club with the second-worst win record of the Roman Abramovich era.

Despite this, many supporters of the club had a positive reaction to the news breaking on Twitter, even if some felt their response went against their better judgement.

One user said: 'Whatever you think about the Lampard rumours. He’s gets this club and it proper Chels. I’m all here for it until the end of the season.'

Another added: 'I [would] rather Chelsea get relegated with Frank Lampard as coach than see Potter's face anywhere near the club, yes I am that bias when it comes super Frank, UCL no 3 loading.'

A third crowed: 'Lampard back. I can't help but love this club'.

Those in favour of the former coach's appointment cited his ties to Chelsea as making all the difference.

One argued: 'Lampard is chelsea. He loves us and we love him. I'm buzzing'.

Another posted: 'This is good business from Chelsea point of view. Lampard might surprise everyone'.

Lampard has been out of work since he was sacked from Everton in January following a string of poor results.

Chelsea fans were disillusioned by Potter's project and had called for his firing long before he was dispatched just under eight months into his tenure.

Appointing a manager with a strong history of the club – despite his checkered coaching background – will no doubt lift the spirits of a fanbase not used to being far off the European places at the top of the Premier League table.

Sportsmail previously reported that there were some concerns about Saltor's connection with Potter, as the interim coach joined his former boss from their previous club Brighton.

Lampard is viewed as a temporary appointment only, with the club hierarchy focused on appointing a long-term manager over the summer.

Julian Nagelsmann, who was sacked in favour of former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel Bayern Munich at the end of March, and Luis Enrique, formerly of the Spanish national team and Barcelona, are the two front-runners for the position.
