Ronaldo set to lose out on £5m windfall
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner's future at United also remains unclear beyond this summer
Manchester United's miserable season is set to cost Cristiano Ronaldo at least £5million.
Ronaldo took a huge pay cut to re-join United from Juventus last summer, swapping his basic £800,000-a-week salary for a reduced - though still stellar - contract at Old Trafford.
The Portugal legend signed a cool £450,000-a-week, two-year deal with United, with a number of significant add-ons included in order for Ronaldo to make up the difference.
Unfortunately for both United and Ronaldo, many of those add-ons were predicated on the Red Devils enjoying a successful 2021/22 season that has already all but ended in March.
United were expected to challenge for the Premier League title and also put on a strong showing in Europe, but the club will end the season trophyless and face a real threat of missing out on Champions League football next season.
Ralf Rangnick's side had already crashed out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup before exiting the Champions League round-of-16 stage to Atletico Madrid before the international break, and now trail Arsenal by four points having played a game more in the race for the top four.
Ronaldo stood to earn £2.5m had United won the Champions League, while he also would have pocketed personal bonuses relating to the Premier League - from a title triumph to a top-four finish - which would have doubled that tally.
The 37-year-old is still likely to earn add-ons from finishing as the club's top scorer this term given his 18 goals in all competitions put him nine ahead of Bruno Fernandes, United's next highest scorer.
However, United's miserable campaign means Ronaldo stands to lose out on at least £5m in a dent to his net worth.

Mirror Football reported earlier this year that United would not stand in Ronaldo's way were he to push for a move at the end of the season, given the realisation that the high-profile move has not been a perfect fit for either the club or the player himself.
