NPFL: Abia Warriors compounds Rivers United woes as El-Kanemi and Nasarawa clash in NNL Super Eight opening

Abia Warriors moved out of the relegation zone after claiming a 2-0 victory over Rivers United at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Wednesday.
It was Abia Warriors’ first win in 10 Nigeria Premier Football League matches.
It was also the Umuahia club’s first win over Rivers United in the league since April 2018.
Samson Obi opened the scoring for the home team in the 64th minute.
The striker rounded up goalkeeper Seidu Mutawakilu before slotting the ball into the net after he was set up by Pascal Nwabueze.
Meme Okike secured the points with the second goal in stoppage time.
Abia Warriors, who now have 44 points from 32 games, moved to 10th position on the table following the win.
Rivers United remains in the 12th position on the table.
Elsewhere, El-Kanemi Warriors will face Nasarawa United in the opening day fixture of the Nigeria National League Super Eight playoff tournament.
The draw for the competition was conducted on Wednesday in Abuja.
Sport Supreme will take on Sokoto United, while Beyond Limits will face Madiba FC in the matchday one fixture.
The other game will see Ikorodu City FC square up against Inter Lagos FC.
The NNL Super Eight playoff tournament will run from June 7–14, 2024.
All the matches will be played at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.
Four teams will secure promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League from the competition.
The winner of the Super Eight playoff tournament will be crowned the 2024 NNL champions.
