NPFL: Akure Sun shines so badly that it sucks all the water in Rivers United

Akure’s Sun shines so badly that it makes life hell for Rivers and disunites it.

The Port Harcourt club continued their bad running of form since they were defeated by Remo Stars Yusuf Ibrahim scored the only goal as Sunshine Stars secured a 1-0 win over Rivers United in their rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League game in Akure on Sunday.

The strike by Ibrahim gives Sunshine Stars hopes of escaping relegation.

The striker volleyed home the lone goal inside their opponent’s box in the 68th minute after being shut out by the resilient visitors for most of the game and ending their recent run of poor form.

Before Sunday, Sunshine have failed to win any of their last four games. The result left them 17th in the table with 39 points, the same as Bayelsa United who are above them.

The goal was also Ibrahim’s fourth goal of the campaign, with the striker ascribing the team’s form to sheer luck, adding that they will keep fighting to escape relegation.

“It’s just been luck all these while. We have been playing good football but the results didn’t come. This kind of result is what we need to boost ourselves and we will keep fighting for the remainder of the season to ensure the team stays up,” Ibrahim told the Punch.

Sunshine Stars’ relegation battle has created some controversies in Akure as commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye reacted by making changes in terms of personnel within the club’s backroom, pruning the squad to 25 and also seeing to the players’ welfare.

Rivers United will endure another bad result in their backlog of matches with two games more for them to equal the number of matches played by other teams.

They face Abia Warriors on Wednesday while their final outstanding game is against Niger Tornadoes at home on May 19.
