Former Real Sociedad midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju has compared the club’s new signing Umar Sadiq to the great Rashidi Yekini.

Sadiq linked up with Real Sociedad from another LaLiga club, Almeria, last week in a deal worth €20m plus €6m in add-ons.

The 25-year-old didn’t take too long to settle down into his new environment scoring on his debut against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid at the weekend.

Adepoju was the first Nigerian to play for the Whites and Blues, spending four seasons at the Anoeta.

The former Nigeria international is delighted to see his compatriot do well at his former club and likened him to former Super Eagles striker and the country’s all-time top scorer, Yekini.

“No, I have never spoken to him; but I follow him, I watch all his games and he seems like a great player, he can give more,” Adepoju told Mundo Deportivo.

“He reminds me of another Nigerian we had, Rashidi Yekini, who we used to call ‘gangling’. I think Sadiq is young and can catch up with Yekini.

“He has a goal, quality, height and runs more or less like him.”

Sadiq scored 43 goals in over 80 appearances for Almeria before switching to Real Sociedad.

Meanwhile, Napoli sporting director, Cristiano Guintoli has downplayed injury concerns surrounding Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen ahead of the side’s UEFA Champions League clash against Liverpool.

There were fears Osimhen could miss out on the game after the Naples club issued a statement on their website on Monday that the Nigeria international picked up a minor injury in last Saturday’s away win at Lazio.

Osimhen, according to the statement, trained separately from his teammates.

But Guintoli has stated that the striker is expected to be fit for the game.

“He (Osimhen) has a little discomfort in the adductor, there is no injury, it is a fatigue that he must manage together with the doctor and decide a few hours of the game with Liverpool if it is appropriate to risk or not,” Guintoli told Kiss Kiss Napoli via Tutto Napoli.

Osimhen has scored two goals in five league appearances for the Partenopei this season.

The Liverpool encounter will hold at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Atalanta winger, Ademola Lookman says the team will strive to get better after Monday night’s away win at Monza.

La Gea defeated their hosts 2-0 in a keenly contested encounter at the U-Power Stadium.

Lookman played a key role in the victory, setting up Rasmus Hojlund for the opening goal in 57th minute.

The 24-year-old’s shot was diverted into the net by Marlon eight minutes later.

The win saw Gian Gasperini’s side climb to top spot on the Serie A table.

It’s the first time Atalanta will occupy top position in the Italian top-flight.

“We’re working hard to be better,” Lookman said after the game.

The Nerazzuri will take on Cremonese in their next league game.

Lastly, Nigeria midfielder Raphael Onyedika has revealed the reason behind his decision to join Club Brugge.

Onyedika was courted by Serie A champions, AC Milan but he opted for a move to Belgium.

Former European champions, Milan wanted him to replace Ivory Coast star Franck Kessie, who dumped them for Barcelona at the end of last season.

Club Brugge paid €10m to secure the services of the talented midfielder, who penned a five-year contract.

“I chose Club Brugge because they are the best team in Belgium and because they want to win everything,” Onyedika told Voetbal Nieuws.

“I also want to win everything, so that’s a good combination. I have also heard that Club Brugge has the best supporters in Belgium.”

The 21-year-old was named the best young player in Denmark last season.
