Senegal forward Sadio Mané said that Liverpool were dreaming of completing an unprecedented Quadruple after they knocked their great rivals Manchester City out of the FA Cup at Wembley.

Mané scored twice as Liverpool outclassed their opponents to set up a meeting against either Chelsea or Crystal Palace, who contest the other semi-final today at the national stadium.

Liverpool trail City by one point in the Premier League, but they are confident of leapfrogging Pep Guardiola’s side as well as going all the way in the Champions League after beating Benfica to set up a semi-final against Villarreal.

“It’s our dream for sure and we will fight for it,” the Senegal player said when asked about winning all four competitions as the season nears its end. “We have a lot of games to go, we will try to do our best.

“Today is special — we were playing one of the best teams in the world — so to win this kind of game, especially in a semi-final, is a big win.”

Mané’s first goal came in comical circumstances as he tackled Zack Steffen, City’s backup goalkeeper after the American dallied on the ball just a few yards from his goalline.

“I think we pushed him to make that mistake,” Mané said. “That is our style.”

Steffen, 27, appeared close to tears after the final whistle and was consoled by the City first-choice goalkeeper Ederson, and Scott Carson, their third choice.

Pep Guardiola, the City manager, refused to castigate Steffen and pointed out that Ederson almost conceded a goal in similar circumstances last Sunday when the teams drew 2-2 in the Premier League. “It was an accident,” Guardiola said. “It happens. Ederson was close in the last game. One of our strong points is to try to play [out from the back] and as a keeper he [Steffen] has this quality.

“I have spoken with the team, not him personally, but he is strong.”

Guardiola’s opposite number, Jürgen Klopp, refused to get carried away with the victory. “The Quadruple talk, I can’t believe it,” the Liverpool manager said. “I don’t think we have a full free week before the last match day — it’s difficult, but who cares?

“We are over the moon, we beat the strongest football team in the world. I am very proud. The first half was one of the best we ever played. We did all the right stuff, we scored in the right moments. I really loved each second of it.”
