PSG was shocked by the lack of Mbappé by Madrid

When Kylian Mbappé opted not to trigger the option to extend his contract until 2025, many assumed Paris Saint-Germain would sell him. Nonetheless, with the transfer window closing this week, the 24-year-old remains on the team.

Although the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner can become a free agent next summer, PSG is taking a gamble. The capital club has built the team around him after the exits of Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr.

Nonetheless, all this could be for nothing, as the Frenchman can still leave. As a result, many will wonder why PSG didn’t sell Mbappé. Well, Diario AS reports that PSG is surprised and didn’t believe the summer would end without a Real Madrid offer for Mbappé.

Los Blancos appear keen on waiting a season and trying their chances to bring the PSG star as a free agent. The Spanish club only has to wait until January to start pre-contract talks. As a result, they likely wanted to avoid overpaying for a player who has the opportunity to walk in less than 12 months.

Regardless of what happens, Mbappé will continue playing at a high level for the capital club. The French national team captain already has three goals in two games for PSG this 2023-24 Ligue 1 season.

However, should the Parisian’s project proceed in the right direction, perhaps it’s enough for him to use one of his options and extend.
