Moyes regrets signing Scamacca instead of Awoniyi for West Ham

West Ham manager David Moyes still regrets his decision not to sign Taiwo Awoniyi as a long-term replacement for Michail Antonio.

Nottingham Forest won the race for the signing of Awoniyi in the summer of 2022 after West Ham opted against bringing him to the London Stadium.

The East London outfit allegedly had the chance to sign the 26-year-old for just £16.7 million 14 months ago.

However, Hammers boss Moyes opted against bringing the Nigeria international to East London.

The Scot brought Gianluca Scamacca to the London Stadium instead. He ended up being a massive failure

and was totally ill-suited to the EPL.

The Nigerian has been truly sensational for Forest since moving to the City Ground from Union Berlin last summer.

Awoniyi has 14 goals and three assists to his name in 38 games in all competitions for the Reds.

It’s not just his goal output that has been impressive though – it’s the way that he occupies opposing defenders that has really caught the eye.

He would have been the perfect upgrade and long-term replacement for Antonio, what with his strength, unselfish running, and 100% commitment.

Signing Awoniyi for just under £17 million in 2022 would surely have been an absolute no-brainer.

Moyes chose not to bring him to the club though. And that now looks like a huge mistake.
