Celebration in Madrid as Alonso snubs Liverpool and Bayern for Leverkusen’s stay

Real Madrid have been blessed with great news on Friday as Xabi Alonso has officially announced that he will continue at Bayer Leverkusen beyond this season.

He has done some excellent work with the Die Werkself, currently sitting top of the Bundesliga table, sitting ten points clear of Bayern Munich with eight games remaining in the season.

Alonso’s decision comes after several months of speculation claiming that the likes of Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Real Madrid were all interested in his contract.

Madrid, unlike the former two, wanted to sign him in 2025, having extended Carlo Ancelotti’s contract recently.

Alonso’s release clause is expected to become active in 2025, as well, which will only help with Madrid’s search for an Ancelotti replacement.

“I had a good meeting with Bayer Leverkusen and I informed them that I will stay and continue at the club. After a lot of talks about my future, I used the break to reflect and make my decision. This is the place to be for me,” Alonso announced, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

Leverkusen are expected to not only break the Bundesliga monotony led by Bayern Munich but also win their first-ever league title, having finished as the runners-up on five different occasions.

“My job at Bayer is not over. I want to help the club, help the players to develop, the board is great…it’s all fantastic here,” Alonso added optimistically.

“I’m still a young coach but I think this is the best decision for my future. I took my time and I’m sure about that.”

While Alonso was linked with Real Madrid for several months straight, he was never expected to sign this season. His continuing is a huge boost for them, especially with Liverpool and Bayern Munich in hot pursuit.

“I’m not gonna comment about Liverpool or Bayern. These are big clubs and I’ve strong links with them but I’m in the place where I want to be.”

Many Madristas were celebrating the news that Alonso has publicly announced to snub Bayern and Liverpool believing he did so to join Real Madrid at the end of the 2024/25 season.
