Despite being promised a handsome $40,000-a-man bonus by the Rivers State governor if they make it to the group phase of the CAF Champions League, Rivers United were beaten blue and black by Wydad AC on Sunday in Morocco.

The reigning Nigeria Professional Football League champions suffered a humiliating 6-0 loss n Sunday’s second-leg tie in Casablanca.

Having only managed a 2-1 1win in the first leg, Rivers United were eliminated with a 7-2 aggregate scoreline.

Rivers United fell behind to defending champions Wydad after just 31 minutes.

Their problems were compounded when Ghanaian goalkeeper Mutawakilu Seidu was sent off for elbowing a Wydad player inside the box and the home team converted the resulting penalty to make it 2-0 going into the break.

They conceded a third goal soon after the restart before the home team extended their lead with a fourth goal in the 55th minute.

The Moroccans completed the rout with two more goals late on to secure passage into the group phase in grand style.

Having now dropped out from the Champions League, both Rivers United and Plateau United will know their Confederation Cup playoff foes on Monday when the draw is conducted.
