Ajax of Amsterdam has been good for budding Nigerian players who joined the club mostly unknown to become famous, and acquire medals and trophies.

The illustrious list includes Super Eagles coach Finidi Goerge, Nwankwo Kanu, Sunday Oliseh, Tijani Babangida and others.

Apart from winning domestic titles, some of these greats have won European titles at Ajax including the prestigious UEFA Champions League.

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey who had a phenomenal season at Rangers made a wise decision to shun offers from European big clubs to continue his development at Ajax.

If he keeps his head down, he has what it takes to emulate other Nigerians like Kanu who moved from Ajax to Serie A giant Inter-Milan and later Ajax or Oliseh who moved from Ajax to Cologne and later Juventus.

Meanwhile, Bassey has sent a message to Rangers fans after securing his switch to Ajax after spending two years with the Scottish Giants.

Sky Sports reported that the 22-year-old has signed for the Dutch Giants for a fee believed to be just under £23million.

The Nigerian international sent a final message to Rangers fans via Twitter on Wednesday

“Firstly I just want to thank God for giving me this opportunity to play for a club that is as historic and amazing as Rangers,” said Bassey.

“I want to thank the manager and the coaching staff.

“For the trust they put in me and helping me to develop both as a person and as a player.

“I want to thank my teammates for all their help, I came here to play football but I’m leaving with brothers for life.”

Bassey added: “I want to thank all the fans.

“You were truly incredible.

“I have never experienced anything like Ibrox.

“You will always have a place in my heart – once a Ger, always a Ger.

“Finally, I wish the team all the best and plenty of success for the future.”

No Rangers fan can begrudge Bassey a move to the Dutch side in what will be a superb decision for his development and future aspirations and it wouldn’t be a shock to see him make a huge move in the future.
