Super Eagles interim coach, Finidi George has reflects on the root cause of the 2-0 loss of the team to the Eagles of Mali on Tuesday night in Marrakech.

Speaking to journalists after the ill fated friendly match, the former Ajax player pointed out that the outcome of the game could have been different if the team converted some of the scoring opportunities they created.

The coach admitted that the team made a few mistakes of which the team consequently got punished.

“We made a few mistakes that cost us the match. It was not a bad game, good intensity and we created a couple of chances and didn’t score, and in games like this, if you don’t take your chances and make mistakes, you get punished" explains Coach Finidi George.

The former assistant coach to Jose Peseiro submitted that though he would have loved to see a different result but it's just a friendly where players can be checked if they are good enough for future use.

“I would have loved a different result, but it was not meant to be. That’s how football is, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

" It’s a friendly game, so you just check to see some players that can be used in the future. That’s the most important thing,” the former Super Eagles opined.

The Super Eagles next assignment is the FIFA 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.

They will take on South Africa and Benin Republic on matchday three and four as the qualifying race gathers momentum.

The Super Eagles drew their first two games of the campaign and they will be looking forward to winning the two matches to brighten their chances of qualifying for the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico come 2026.
