Manchester City hosts Chelsea on Sunday in FA Cup

After suffering disappointment on New Year's Eve when they dropped ground to Premier League leaders Arsenal, Pep Guardiola's men bounced back with a victory over Chelsea to kickstart their new year.

With just five points separating the Blues and the Gunners, you would be forgiven for thinking the FA and Carabao Cups were the least of Guardiola's concerns.

However, when in the midst of a similarly high-pressure Premier League title race last season, Guardiola was questioned about how much focus he had on the FA Cup.

The Catalan boss' response told you everything you needed to know about how he will approach the next couple of matches.

He explained: "How do you ask me when these six years, we play every game like it’s the last game of our lives. I know how difficult it will be away at Southampton.

"I’m sorry, I trust a lot, my team, my players. I know it looks like everything is gone but I trust a lot my players to arrive in every competition we are [in].

"Like at Southampton, Crystal Palace. I want to do it with these players, I wouldn’t change one single player for the next two months."

While it is obvious that City will not field a team of untested youth players on Sunday or Wednesday, this does not mean that the Blues are going to resist the temptation to rotate players entirely. Erling Haaland, for example, has not had a rest since the domestic campaign restarted following the World Cup.

With Julian Alvarez now back up to speed and ready to feature from the start, surely the Argentine will be chosen ahead of the Norwegian at some stage.

Rodri, meanwhile, was exhausted at Stamford Bridge and it now seems highly likely that Kalvin Phillips will make his way into the line-up having recovered from his 'weight issue' which Guardiola highlighted over Christmas.
