Manchester United received some much needed good news on Friday morning after Bruno Fernandes signed a new contract that will keep him at the club for at least the next four seasons.

Fernandes, 27, has signed a new £240,000-a-week deal which will run to the end of the 2025-26 campaign, but United have the option to extend the contract by a further year.

The Portugal playmaker’s previous contract, worth more than £150,000 a week, was due to expire in the summer of 2025, but United wanted to reward him with a new and improved contract because of his impressive performances since he arrived from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020.

Fernandes has scored 49 goals in 117 appearances since joining United in a £47 million deal.

“There is so much more that I want to achieve here, and I know that is the same for the rest of the squad and staff,” Fernandes said.

“More than anything, we want to give the fans the success that they deserve. We have shared some great moments over the last years, but the best is yet to come from myself and this team.

“Even after two years, it still feels amazing to step out at Old Trafford, to hear the fans sing my song and to score in front of the Stretford End. It is a true privilege to wear this shirt and to fight for our incredible club.”

The fact that Fernandes is willing to stay at United despite their recent poor form is a boost for the club.

United are sixth in the Premier League and will end the campaign without any silverware after their recent exit from the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

Although Fernandes has not been in his best form this season, he still has nine goals and 14 assists in 37 appearances.
