Eguavoen is the Super Eagles' interim coach.

The Technical Director of NFF Augustine Eguavoen has been appointed as Super Eagles interim coach after the exit of Jose Peseiro earlier on Friday.

Though, there is no official communication from the NFF, and Ademola Olajire the NFF Director of Communications could not be reached but media is rife with the news of Eguavoen's appointment.

Eguavoen was appointed manager of Nigeria on an interim basis for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, following the departure of Gernot Rohr.

Peseiro, 63, was appointed as the coach of the Super Eagles after Nigeria’s exit from the Afcon 2021 tournament in Cameroon, taking office in May 2022.

The Portuguese led Nigeria to the AFCON 2023 tournament in Cote d’Ivoire, but his team fell short of glory in the final, with Sebastien Haller putting the nail to the coffin of the exhausted Super Eagles.

The contract of the former Porto manager ended in February and he vacated his role on the sidelines for the Super Eagles, leaving the team despite taking a pay cut.

Eguavoen will take charge of the Eagles on an interim basis, till a permanent solution is sorted out.

He will be assisted by Enyimba International head coach Finidi George.

Meanwhile, Peseiro has expressed his gratitude to the NFF and all Nigerian supporters after ending his stint with the Super Eagles.

In a parting message, the former Porto and Venezuela coach said it was a privilege to be part of the Nigeria national team.

“Yesterday, we concluded our contract with the NFF. It was a pride and honour to coach the Super Eagles. It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfillment,” Peseiro wrote on X (formerly Twitter)

“Guys, we are thankful; it has been a privilege to be part of this family. We will miss you, but we will always be there for you, no matter where you are. A big hug to all of you.”

Nigeria’s next assignment will be in June when they take on South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
