Caulker reveals the untold story behind Odemwingie’s embarrassing deadline day move to QPR

Retired Super Eagles star Peter Odemwingie’s failed move from West Brom to QPR is one of the most infamous stories of any transfer deadline day.

The former Nigeria forward, 42, turned up at QPR's training ground in January 2013 as he looked to seal a last-minute switch to the London outfit.

But a deal was not completed despite Sky Sports filming Odemwingie's arrival at QPR late in the evening - hours before the window closed.

He later slammed West Brom on social media for "reaching into his pocket", insisting he still wanted a move away.

Odemwingie ended up joining Cardiff nine months later - where he teamed up with ex-Tottenham defender Steven Caulker.

And Caulker, 31, who is now a free agent after departing Wigan, revealed on Friday what Odemwingie told him about the remarkable saga.

He told Sky Sports: "When he arrived I was desperate to ask him, but I thought I'd let him settle in.

"One of the nicest men I've ever met - and two weeks in I asked him 'What ever happened at QPR? Because it doesn't fit what I'm seeing of you as a character here and what I'm seeing there. What happened?'

"He explained to me that it was none of his doing. He was misinformed by agents, misinformed by the club that the deal was done.

"He turns up there with his bags packed ready to sign and they weren't expecting him.

"So he was embarrassed about the situation, but not his own doing."

Odemwingie netted 30 goals in 87 Premier League games across three seasons with West Brom.

But he struggled after eventually moving away from the Hawthorns.

He netted just twice for Cardiff, before registering five goals in 31 games for Stoke.

Unsuccessful spells in the Championship followed with Bristol City and Rotherham before he ended his career with a one-year stint at Indonesian club Madura United.

He hung up his boots six years ago, finishing with an international record of 11 goals in 65 games for Nigeria.

Since retiring, he has turned his hand to trying to become a golf coach.
