Chelsea ran out of patience with Graham Potter on Sunday, firing the English manager with the club languishing in the middle of the Premier League standings despite a spending spree on new players across the last two transfer windows.

According to Telegraph Sport columnist Jamie Carragher, it was a "ridiculous decision" to replace Thomas Tuchel with Graham Potter.

"Todd [Boehly] said he would be different to Roman [Abramovich],' Carragher wrote on Twitter, in response to Chelsea's official announcement Potter had been sacked."

"I feel for Graham Potter, but it was inevitable,' he added. 'You don’t change Tuchel for Potter. Ridiculous decision to start with."

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker tweeted "another bites the dust, Graham Potter the latest to be fired."

Speaking to Sky Sports, Chelsea Women's manager Emma Hayes said: "Obviously I'm upset for Graham and the club. I know everybody wanted to make it work.

"If the owners feel like they have to go in another direction then of course, as always, I support the decisions and wish Graham the best.

"With 10 games left to play in the Premier League, I'm sure the boys will do everything to get us back on track. I'm a manager and I'm always gutted when managers lose their job."

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea has swiftly turned their attention to securing the services of Julian Nagelsmann who was fired last week by Bayern Munich and, ironically, replaced Potter’s Stamford Bridge predecessor Thomas Tuchel.

The Blues will need to act swiftly given Tottenham have also made contact with Nagelsmann following the departure of Antonio Conte.

The likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane, also currently out of work, are likely to come into consideration, while Brendan Rodgers, sacked by Leicester earlier on Sunday, has had his admirers in west London in the past.

Chelsea are back in action on Tuesday night against Liverpool where Bruno Saltor will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach.
