Budapest 2023 Trials: Amusan wins as Ogundiran and Itsekiri win men and women century

World Record holder in 100m hurdles Tobi Amusan on Wednesday retain  100m hurdles after winning the 2023 Athletic Federation of Nigeria National Trials in Benin, Edo state.

The world champion raced to the finish line in 12.70secs ahead of Faith Osamuyi who finished second in 13.90secs and Kemi Francis-Peterson in third place with a time of 14.14secs. Speaking after her race, Amusan said it’s all about her execution and happy to have won again.

“One thing I always do during any of my races, I always target my execution and that’s what I did today,” she said. “I started the season with an injury, but now I am good to go. I will continue to get myself ready for my rest races before the World Championship.

 “I am not under any pressure going forward, I will continue to work hard to achieve my goals.” In his own words, the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, said it was a good thing seeing athletes returning to the state where sports started.

He added: “You know sports started in the old Bendel State and Benin in particular, so it’s not about athletics alone, but all sports and we will be having the Aquatics Federation very soon here at the stadium.”

Meanwhile, the women’s 100m was won by Blessing Ogundiran with a time of 11.50secs while Faith Okwose and Ese Brume finished second and third in a time of 11.51secs and 11.52secs respectively.

The men’s final was won by Usheoritse Itsekiri in 10.02secs. Seye Ogunlewe finished second in a time of 10.11secs and homeboy, Alaba Akintola 10.12secs in third.
