Afcon 2021: Hosts, Cameroon beat Gambia to semi final ticket

Cameroon have secured passage into the semi-final stage of the Africa Cup of Nations after they beat the Gambia 2-0 on Saturday at the Stade de Japoma, Douala.

While the Indomitable Lions and the Scorpions of Gambia were even after the first 45 minutes, the hosts stepped up with two well-taken goals in the second half to stay on course for a sixth Afcon title.

Karl Toko Ekambi scored both goals for Cameroon as he took his overall tally at this Afcon tournament to five just one behind his teammate Vincent Aboubakar who is still the tournament’s leading scorer.

Before today, Cameroon have progressed from two of their last three quarter-final matches at the Africa Cup of Nations (L1), going through on penalties against Senegal (5-4) in the most recent such encounter in 2017.
