Former Super Eagles and Everton striker Victor Anichebe has blasted Frank Lampard's appointment as Everton manager; describing it as "absurd" following the 3-2 defeat against Burnley.

Anichebe, who played 168 games for the Toffees, was left frustrated by Wednesday night's defeat at relegation rivals Burnley.

The result leaves Lampard and company hovering dangerously a point above the drop zone with just two wins in their last nine league games.

Writing on Instagram, Anichebe slammed Lampard's January appointment as "absurd" and rated Everton's chances of relegation at "60 percent".

He said: "Appointing Lampard (who is a good coach) but appointing him when you know you're in a relegation battle with a tough run in... was absurd... him getting Dele Alli who is a luxury player... in a relegation fight... baffling.

"If something doesn't happen tonight they are 100 per cent going down. At the moment it's 60 per cent. Keep the faith."

Anichebe though clarified his comments on Thursday and insisted that while Lampard was the right man for the job.

But he suggested a change is needed in terms of the mentality at the club, or on the training pitch in regards to the playing style.

Anichebe was originally left exasperated when Salomon Rondon was only introduced by Lampard in the 87th minute of the game.

He wrote: "Too late... should've brought him on 10 mins ago it was obvious... DCL (Dominic Calvert-Lewin) has been poor.

"The players aren't good enough but neither is Frank. As much as I love him as a player and he looks a top guy. Everton will 100 per cent go down if a change isn't made."

Instead, Anichebe joked that the club should appoint Sam Allardyce, who is renowned for his ability to save a club from relegation.

Allardyce spent a brief six months at Everton between November 2017 and May 2018, but things soon turned sour with the Goodison Park faithful.

Posting a picture to his Instagram story of Allardyce, Anichebe wrote: "I said it weeks ago... y'all laughed. Some said rather go down with dignity. Okkkkk."

Anichebe though also clarified his comments on Allardyce, insisting he was joking about the appointment. get three months extra freeBE-ING REAL Ex-Everton striker
