The winter transfer window closes across Europe Tuesday, here are the top deals signed and sealed before the deadline.

Enzo Fernández to Chelsea

Chelsea have reached an agreement in principle with Benfica to sign Enzo Fernández for a British-record £105 million after negotiations went down to the wire in a dramatic conclusion to the winter window, writes Tom Roddy.

Chelsea set new British record

Todd Boehly’s Chelsea will set a new record spend for a January transfer window with the arrival of World Cup-winner Fernández, 22, taking the west London club’s total outgoings to about £318 million for the month.

Chelsea had been reluctant to meet the £105 million release clause in Fernández’s contract and had attempted to negotiate a payment structure spread across instalments before reaching an agreement with Benfica.

Fernández, who starred for Argentina in Qatar, had been Chelsea’s top target during the window but negotiations with Benfica were drawn out as the Portuguese club resisted attempts to agree a lower fee.

The deal for Fernández is subject to the two clubs completing the necessary paperwork before midnight. If they are successful the Argentinian will become the eighth signing for Graham Potter’s squad this month and is set to join on a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge, in line with his fellow arrivals.

Ziyech move to PSG collapse

Hakim Ziyech’s loan move from Chelsea to Paris Saint-Germain is in danger of collapsing after documents confirming the move were not submitted in time, preventing the Moroccan forward from being registered.

Chelsea had spent the day negotiating with PSG over the deal for Ziyech, who has spent the day in Paris waiting for confirmation to join the club. PSG are attempting to salvage the deal by appealing to the Ligue de Football Professionnel.

Sabitzer joins Man Utd

Marcel Sabitzer meanwhile had his medical at Carrington late last night and Manchester United submitted a deal sheet to the Premier League, giving them until midnight to try to complete his loan deal.

United were forced into the market after Christian Eriksen was ruled out for at least three months with an ankle injury sustained in the FA Cup win over Reading last weekend. It is understood that Sabitzer, the 28-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder, is set to be the only player to move to United on deadline day.

The club turned down the chance to sign the Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar and Atletico Madrid duo Yannick Carrasco and Saúl Ñíguez for various reasons and instead opted to push ahead with a deal for Sabitzer, who is expected to join on loan until the end of the season.

Sabitzer, the Austria midfielder, has not started a Bundesliga game for Bayern since October 8. The German club planned to sell him in the summer but decided to let him go today after hearing of United’s interest in him.

Bayern planned to sell Sabitzer in the summer but may now consider letting him leave six months early if they receive a reasonable proposal from United, who want to sign him on loan until the end of the campaign.

Arsenal signs Jorginho

Arsenal have completed the signing of Jorginho for £13 million from Chelsea on a 1½-year deal. The Premier League leaders failed twice to sign Moisés Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion, and so Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, turned his attention to the Chelsea and Italy midfielder.

Although Arteta’s model has been to sign younger players and offload older players, he admitted that the club has to “think short-term, but as well as the medium and long-term” when he signed Leandro Trossard, 28, from Brighton this month. He also came under pressure when he did not sign a replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January transfer window last year and then Arsenal finished fifth.

Jorginho, a player that Arteta has tried to sign before, had six months left on his contract at Stamford Bridge. Arsenal pushed for the deal in the knowledge that Chelsea will need to offload some players after a busy transfer window, including the potential £115 million transfer of Fernández.

Navas becomes Forest’s 28th signing this season

Keylor Navas completed a last-minute deadline day move to Nottingham Forest to become their 28th signing since they were promoted to the Premier League.

Forest had been in talks with Paris Saint-Germain for the last week of the window and the deal for the goalkeeper was resurrected late on Tuesday. It is understood the three-times Champions League winner sought assurances over his playing time and there had to be a compromise over his £7.9 million-a-year wages.

The 36-year-old completed a medical in Paris on Tuesday evening and could be in contention to make his debut in Forest’s league game against Leeds United at the City Ground on Sunday.

Injury to first-choice goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who is on loan from Manchester United, forced Forest to act in the transfer window. Henderson had initially hoped he would be back in contention for this weekend’s game but the best-case scenario is that he will be out for a few more weeks.

Felipe and Shelvey join Forest

Brazilian defender Felipe and midfielder Jonjo Shelvey also signed for Forest. Shelvey completed his medical on Monday but travelled back up to Newcastle to say goodbye to the supporters at St James’ Park after spending the past seven years on Tyneside.

The midfielder has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal to keep him at the City Ground until the summer of 2025 while Felipe has put pen to paper on an 18-month contract to keep him at the club until the summer of 2024. The Brazilian centre back signed from Atletico Madrid for a fee of about £2 million.

Southampton set to seal Onuachu and Sulemana deals

Southampton have agreed a deal for Paul Onuachu worth £17 million plus bonuses. The forward is the top scorer for Genk in the Belgian league this season and has scored 85 goals in 134 matches for them. He was signed from Danish side Midtjylland in 2019, where he scored 74 goals in 181 games. Southampton earlier failed to persuade Moussa Dembélé to join from Lyon.

Southampton have been crying out for a goalscorer and Onuachu from Genk has 16 goals in 19 games in the Belgian League this season. They are also expecting to pay a club-record £22 million for the Ghanaian World Cup winger Kamaldeen Sulemana from Rennes. Southampton’s board have given Nathan Jones a chance of getting out of the relegation mire.

Pérez joins Betis on loan

The Leicester City winger Ayoze Pérez has joined Real Betis on loan until the end of the season. Pérez’s contract with the Foxes expires at the end of the season which means he has likely played his last game for the club.

The 29-year-old has played 114 times for Leicester since signing from Newcastle in the summer 2019 window for £30 million. He missed Leicester’s FA Cup win against Walsall at the weekend with what Rodgers described as a knock, but it is understood he was preparing for his move away.

Leicester sign Tete and Souttar

Leicester have brought in the Brazilian winger Tete and were making a last-minute push for more attacking reinforcements. Jack Harrison was not convinced about making a move to the King Power from Leeds, but even without another attacker Rodgers was comfortable letting Pérez leave.

The club are expected to announce the signing of Harry Souttar before deadline after the centre back underwent a medical this afternoon. Leicester agreed a £15 million fee with Stoke to land the 24-year-old defender. He would join the left back Victor Kristiansen, who signed from Copenhagen last week, as defensive cover for Rodgers’ side.

Chelsea block rivals Newcastle from Gallagher

Newcastle United have so far been blocked in their attempts to land Conor Gallagher because those in charge at Chelsea see the club as a major rival.

Gallagher is a player Newcastle inquired about in the summer and have now made a fresh attempt to land the 22-year-old.

However, the move has been blocked as Chelsea — ten points behind Newcastle in the Premier League table — view Howe’s side as a direct rival after their takeover 14 months ago. Gallagher is expected to remain in west London.

There have been reports of interest from Everton for the Newcastle winger Ryan Fraser, who is available for a fee of about £10 million, but so far there has been no official approach. Jonjo Shelvey has signed for Nottingham Forest.

Emery recalls Traoré

Bertrand Traoré is set to return to Aston Villa after being recalled from his loan spell at Istanbul Basaksehir.

The winger, who fell out with the previous manager, Steven Gerrard, has been back at the club’s Bodymoor Heath training ground for the past couple of weeks recovering from a knee injury and Unai Emery, the manager, has decided to keep the 27-year-old in his squad to give himself an extra attacking option.

The departure of Danny Ings has left Emery seeking more firepower in front of goal. Jhon Durán arrived this month but, though an exciting prospect, he lacks Premier League experience.

Villa are unlikely to make a move but Emery is keen to bring in a striker with proven Premier League pedigree in the summer.

Doherty in Atletico, Porro in Spur

The right back Matt Doherty is having a medical at Atletico Madrid after the 31-year-old had his contract terminated by Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs are close to signing Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon, giving Antonio Conte a different option at right back. Porro, the Spain wingback, will at first join Conte’s squad on loan, which will cost the London club £4 million. The 23-year-old will then join on a permanent deal in the summer when Spurs are obliged to pay Sporting £41 million. Porro will join until 2028, doubling his wage to about £85,000 a week.

The deal is structured to allow Sporting to push the majority of the fee into the next financial year. Sporting bought Porro for £7 million last summer from Manchester City, who added a clause that entitled them to 30 per cent of any profits made on his sale. So, City will earn £10.2 million from Porro’s move to Spurs.

Unhappy Cancelo in Germany

The Manchester City full back João Cancelo has joined Bayern Munich on loan for the remainder of the season after his relationship with Pep Guardiola broke down.

The Portugal international joins the Bundesliga champions on a short-term loan deal after his relationship with Guardiola deteriorated over a lack of playing time. The German side have the option to make the transfer permanent in the summer for £61.6 million.

Cancelo, 28, has been a standout player for City since arriving in 2019 but his playing time since the World Cup has been limited and the Catalan gave him the green light to leave.
