Arsenal legend now Crystal Palace manager  Patrick Vieira says building Nigeria born defender Tayo Adaramola’s confidence is the key to unleashing the young defender’s full potential, after a promising first start for the senior side.

“It was a really good experience for him,” Vieira said in his post-match press conference. “I think he did some really good stuff. He showed his potential.

“We have to support him and keep working with him. You could see that he was really nervous because he didn’t allow himself to go forward as much as he likes to do. That is part of developing young players as well.

“There is a platform there to develop him. Being there in games like that and in the first-team dressing room will give him that confidence to work as a player.”

Meanwhile, Adaramola has Jairo Riedewald’s support on the training ground helped prepare him for the step-up to the first team, as his first senior start ended in victory against Stoke City in the FA Cup.

“It was an amazing feeling,” he told Palace TV. “A feeling I’ll never forget. I’m just happy I could do this with my family and friends around me too. It’s a happy moment for me and a happy moment for the Academy as well.

“Jairo – what a great guy. He took me under his wing as soon as I came here so I'm really happy for him. He went through the Academy in Ajax so he knows how it can be for a young player when they come up.

“He talks to them and he tries to guide us young boys when we come up.”

Adaramola says he hopes he can build on a first start and gain some more minutes this season.

“I’ll take it as a first game,” he said. “It’s steady progress, and hopefully I can build on that and try to get more games and play more, get more minutes and get more games.

“I think this is a great game against a Championship club, so hopefully I can show that if I can play against a Championship club, I can play against a Premier League club. It was enjoyable.

“The conditions were perfect football weather. The rain was getting in my eyes – my hair products were getting in my eyes, that was the only problem! It was good football weather.

“I enjoyed it.”
