Nigeria born Irish sprinter Rhasidat Adeleke set a new Irish 200m record while running for the University of Texas over the weekend.

The 19-year-old ran 22.59 seconds as she finished second behind Texas A&M's Laila Owens.

The time takes a massive 0.31 off the previous best which Adeleke set at the European U20 Championships in Estonia last summer.

The race, which had a tailwind of 2.0m/s (right at the legal limit), was part of a meeting at the Cushing Stadium in College Station, the home of Texas A&M.

The time is also well inside the qualifying standards for the World Championships, which take place in Oregon in July, and the European Championships, which are being held in Munich in August.

Last month, Adeleke set a new Irish 60m record, running 7.17 seconds at the NCAA D1 Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Six weeks earlier, at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in Albuquerque, she broke the Irish 200m indoor record when she ran 20.85.
