French forward Kylian Mbappe has stressed his sadness on social media after Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League elimination at the hands of Real Madrid.
The 23-year-old scored a first-half goal to give PSG a 2-0 lead on aggregate, following his strike in second-half stoppage time in the first leg, but a Karim Benzema hat-trick in the second half saw Real Madrid flip the tie on its head and secure their place in the quarter-finals.
"Difficult moment. The Champions League was a big objective for us, but we failed," read Mbappe's post on Instagram.
"The season isn't over and whatever happens to us we will remain united & determined until the last game of the season.
"Thanks to the fans who supported us and made the trip.
Mbappe was very upset when he left the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night, as he - and his PSG teammates - had high hopes for the Champions League this season.
In particular, the French forward felt like he had played well across the two legs and that his team had not played to the same standards, which caused him to be frustrated and angry.
Rather than speak in the aftermath of the match and have his words potentially misinterpreted, Mbappe wanted to wait until he got back to Paris before offering any thoughts on PSG's elimination.
All that remains for Mbappe now is the chance to win Ligue 1 and to announce what he is going to do with his future, with Real Madrid very confident of securing his signature on a free transfer.
