Football suspended in Argentina after assassination attempt on Vice President
A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attempted assassination
Argentina has suspended all football matches with immediate effect following a shock assassination attempt on the country's vice-president.
Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was the subject of a failed assassination on Thursday - to the shock of the entire world.
In light of the failed assassination, President Alberto Fernandez declared Friday a national holiday so that all political parties could express their support for Fernandez de Kirchner.
And the Argentine Football Association has shown solitude with the vice-president by postponing their schedule fixtures.
A statement read: "The Argentinian Football Association expresses its strongest repudiation of what happened with vice president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.
"We call on society as a whole, warning that violence of any kind is never the solution."
Friday's Primera Division matches have been postponed as a result of the suspension of the league.
Patronato vs. Union, Rosario Central vs. Talleres and Lanus vs. Tigre will all have to be rescheduled due to the suspension of the league.
Matches in Argentina's regionalised third division, women's championship and reserve league have also been postponed.
A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attempted assassination.
Footage captured the man pointing a loaded pistol in the face of Fernandez de Kirchner as she arrived home in the Recoleta neighbourhood.
The man - who managed to emerge from the crowd - pulled the trigger but the gun failed to fire, sparring the vice-president from almost certain death.
President Fernandez said: "We can disagree, we can have deep disagreements, but hate speech cannot take place because it breeds violence and there is no chance of violence coexisting with democracy."
Fernandez de Kirchner has yet to comment on the assassination attempt, which came amid allegations of corruption.
She is accused of fraudulently awarding public works contracts and defrauding the state in Patagonia while she was president between 2007 and 2015.
