Everton set to sack Lampard
Everton are set to sack Frank Lampard in the wake of Saturday’s Premier League defeat to West Ham, sources have told Football Insider.
The manager’s position had been under major threat going into the showdown against David Moyes’ own struggling Hammers side.
But the defeat at London Stadium, which left Everton joint-bottom of the table, will seal Lampard’s fate after a boardroom meeting on Friday discussed the potential scenarios.
Lampard is on the brink following a wretched run of results that leaves the club’s proud top-flight record hanging by a thread.
It is believed that Everton owner Farhad Moshiri had been minded to dismiss Lampard over the next fortnight going into Saturday’s match, regardless of the outcome of the relegation clash.
The Merseysiders have a two-week break without a fixture as they are not involved next weekend, having already exited the FA Cup at the hands of Man United.
The defeat to West Ham was Everton’s 11th of the season from 20 Premier League games and their fourth in five matches in the competition since their campaign resumed after the World Cup.
Goodison owner Moshiri, who rarely attends matches these days, will green light the start of the process of appointing yet another new manager.
A new man is expected to be in the dugout for the next Premier League game against Everton on 4 February, with the club’s former assistant manager Duncan Ferguson, 51, a strong contender for the post.
Lampard had been under pressure at Goodison before the World Cup but, as revealed by Football Insider on 15 November, Everton chiefs decided to stand by and give him the chance to turn their season around when the campaign resumed.
The Chelsea legend oversaw a notable draw at Man City at the end of last month, but that has been followed by defeats to Brighton, Southampton and now West Ham.
Lampard joined Everton in January of last year and managed to avert relegation in the final weeks of the season.
The former Chelsea and England midfielder led his side to 10 points from a possible 15 in their last five games of the 2021-22 campaign to avoid the drop.
