Relay gold for Nigeria

The 2022 Commonwealth Games is going on nicely for Team Nigeria with two more medals added in the 4x100m finals event on Sunday.

In the women’s 4x100m final, the quartet of Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma and Grace Nwokocha made history to win the gold at the Alexander Stadium.

With an African record of 42.10s, the quartet became Nigeria's first women’s relay team to win a Commonwealth Games gold.

Barely a month ago, the Nigerian women set a 42.22 seconds African record in Oregon, USA at the World Athletics championships.

But the record did not last for four weeks before it was broken on Sunday.

Amusan started the historic run with a brilliant first leg before handing over to Ofili who ensured Nigeria maintained the advantage before giving Chukwuma who did well to give the anchor leg runner Grace Nwokocha a good chance to seal the first position.

The men’s team also did well with the quartet of Udodi Onwuzurike, Favour Ashe, Alaba Akintola and Raymond Ekevwo also making history with the bronze medal win.

The medal is the first by the men’s 4x100m relay team since 1982.
