Super Eagles and Rangers left-back Calvin Bassey is set to leave Rangers for a fee of £ 20 million, according to the Telegraph.

This follows an outstanding campaign with Rangers in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League.

The Nigeria international is seen as a ready-made replacement for outgoing Lisandro Martinez who is on his way to join former boss Erik ten Hag as Manchester United's new recruit.

Sky Sports News had claimed that Bassey would be 'open' to talking to Villa about a possible move to the Midlands, but it would seem Gerrard pursued other targets given the price tag Rangers set for one of their star players.

He made 50 appearances across all competitions last season and was named in the Europa League team of the season following the club's run to the final.

Bassey also put in a man-of-the-match showing against Hearts in the Scottish Cup Final a week after Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side were defeated on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties in Seville.
