Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been told to report for preseason training this.

The 37-year-old has informed the Red Devils of his desire to depart this summer after citing his need to play Champions League football.

Ronaldo is also understood to be left disappointed by the club's lack of transfer activity, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner believing they haven't been "ambitious" enough.

But United are understood to be desperate to keep hold of their talismanic striker with the player still having a year left on his contract.

Despite United insisting he isn't for sale, Chelsea are said to be at the front of the queue to sign him.

New Blues owner Todd Boehly recently met with Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes to discuss a potential move for the Real Madrid legend.

Meanwhile Serie A giants Napoli are also keen on securing the services of the former Juventus ace as they look to bring him back to Italy.

Ronaldo is currently on holiday with partner Georgina Rodriguez and his five children in Majorca.

But according to the Mirror, he has been told by the club he must report back to Carrington imminently.

They state that Ronaldo has been alerted that he has to be on the plane on Friday for their two-and-a-half-week tour of Thailand and Australia.

United fans have taken to social media where they have stated they would be more than happy to see their legend sold.

One fan tweeted: "Let him leave!!It will open doors for others."

Another commented: "Best news of this window."

A third added: "Get rid not worth the hassle."

There has been speculation since the end of last season that Cristiano Ronaldo will leave Manchester United, and the latest reports suggest that this may be a reality.

The Portuguese is not at all happy about playing in the Europa League next season with the Red Devils and is looking for a way out.

According to The Times, the Portuguese star has asked Manchester United to facilitate an exit if the club receives a satisfactory offer.

He wants to play for a team that is in the Champions League next season. This cannot be offered to him by the Red Devils, nor by Jose Mourinho's Roma or Newcastle.

Therefore, Chelsea and Sporting CP seem to be the leading candidates for his signature.

It is said that new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly met with Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes recently, and with the departure of Romelu Lukaku, the Blues are in the market for a new striker.

Whether he will want to totally rupture his relationship with the United fans by signing for a rival, however, is questionable.

The most romantic option would be for him to return to Sporting CP, the club with whom he made his professional debut.

Hugo Viana, sporting director of the Lisbon club, did not close the door on his return.

"I don't think it's possible now... but you never know," Viana told Sky Sports.

There are still rumours of Ronaldo joining one of Europe's heavyweights. The arrival of Cristiano at Bayern Munich as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski sounds quite logical but it is far from the truth, with Bayern's sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic dismissing such talk.

Other clubs such as PSG or Real Madrid could make room for him. However, it does not seem that the Portuguese star is in the plans of either of them.
