Spanish Super Cup Final 2024: It’s El Clásico in Saudi Arabia on Sunday

We now know the teams that will vie to become the Spanish Super Cup champions in 2024. Real Madrid triumphed over Atlético (5-3) in a frenetic first semifinal and will play in the grand final of the tournament held in Saudi Arabia. Winning the Spanish Super Cup may not be the top trophy target for the biggest teams in the country, but when you throw in the fact that the second semifinal saw Barcelona defeat Osasuna (2-0), creating a Clásico final, things get a whole lot more important.

The tournament underwent a format change several seasons ago. Previously, it featured a two-legged final, with one match at each of the participating teams’ home grounds, pitting the La Liga champion against the Copa del Rey champion.

In 2019, however, a revamp arrived bringing us the ‘Final 4′ format. This includes the top two teams from LaLiga in the previous season and the two finalists of the Copa del Rey, with one semifinal pairing the league champion with the Copa runner-up, and the other semifinal featuring the Copa champion against the league runner-up. Each tie is a single-match affair, and the winners face off in the final, which is also a single match. Cynics point to the fact that this new format almost always ensures that both Barça and Madrid will be involved, and the move to Saudi Arabia means that is all the more crucial.

In this latest edition, Barcelona entered as the La Liga champion, Osasuna as the Copa del Rey runner-up. Real Madrid was there after winning the domestic cup and because they also finished as the second-placed team in the league, the fourth place went to the team that came third, Atlético Madrid.

The final of the Spanish Super Cup will take place on Sunday 14 January, at 2 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. PT. It will be held at the Al-Awwal Park Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a venue with a capacity of 25,000 spectators, where both semifinals were also played.
