Sharapova believes Coco Gauff can repeat feats in tennis in other areas.

Retired tennis star Maria Sharapova revealed she was "so happy" seeing Coco Gauff win the US Open and highlighted she thinks the 19-year-old American has the potential to establish herself well in different areas. In the US Open final, Gauff created an impressive comeback as she defeated Aryna Sabalenka 2-6 6-3 6-2.

“Yes, yes, I couldn’t miss that, I just felt like it was a match that would... Seeing Coco on that stage and all the expectations from the beginning of the tournament... I didn’t think it was the highest quality because there were so many nerves on I think on both sides.

“I was so happy to see Coco win. I have been saying this for years I think she has the ability to transcend the sport into so many... Bridging entertainment and sport and culture and fashion. She has such a great voice and most importantly she is an amazing competitor which is just like the full package and it came together for her in New York City.

So I wanted to be there,” Sharapova said on the Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast.

Leading up to the US Open, Gauff won two titles on hard courts, and that put her among the top favorites for the US Open title.

But also, that led to major expectations being put on Gauff. Many were interested in seeing how Gauff would respond in those circumstances and the American responded by delivering big time at Flushing Meadows. By winning the US Open, Gauff became the first American teenager since Serena Williams in 1999 to win the US Open.

At the start of the 2023 season, Gauff highlighted her goal for 2023 was to become a Grand Slam champion and also try to attack the world No 1 spot. Following her US Open win, Gauff also reached a career-high ranking of No.

3 in the world.
