Iwobi and Bassey optimistic Fulham will upset Man Utd at Old Trafford

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi and defender Calvin Bassey are optimistic Fulham has what it takes to defeat former dreaded English Premier League side Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

In a joint video interview with their club website Iwobi and Bassey said they are now focused on the Premier League after suffering disappointment in the Africa Cup of Nations final on February 11.

Iwobi and Bassey saw game time as the Cottagers suffered a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League last weekend, with the latter playing for fourteen minutes and the former taking the field for the entirety of the second half.

Next up for the Nigerians and their Fulham teammates is a visit to the iconic Old Trafford Stadium, where they face an in-form Manchester United side that has won five consecutive games in all competitions including four in the Premier League.

The Cottagers have not managed a win in their last eighteen matches against Manchester United and will be aiming to halt that sequence on Saturday.

Nevertheless, both Iwobi and Bassey expressed confidence in their team's ability to compete and potentially upset the odds.

Speaking to Fulham's official website, Iwobi said: "I am looking forward to it. I mean Old Trafford the pitch is huge so need to make sure my lungs are ready for that game.

"We'll analyze them and see where we can hurt them and stop their strengths."

Bassey added: "Apart from the technical and tactical side of it, I think it's just believing in yourself. We know they have got a good atmosphere, they've got a big stadium but we're there to do a job.

"It's just about focusing. The gaffer has told us where we can hurt them. We are just going to try to execute the game plan as well as we can.

"We also have to believe that we can go there and have the ball, create opportunities and at the end of the day it's about enjoying football also.

"We all enjoy playing good football, scoring goals and winning so that's what we are going to try to do."

Iwobi and Bassey featured prominently at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations,  playing every single game contested by the Super Eagles
