Israel Olatunde set new Irish Indoor 60m record
The Dundalk man clocked in a time of 6.57 seconds, obliterating Hession's record of 6.61 seconds.
Nigeria-born Israel Olatunde has now proved beyond all doubt that he is Ireland's fastest-ever man, after breaking Paul Hession's 60m record at the 123.ie National Indoor Athletics Championships in the Sport Ireland Campus in Abbottstown.
The Dundalk man clocked in a time of 6.57 seconds, obliterating Hession's record of 6.61 seconds.
It continues a phenomenal period for the 20-year-old, who broke Hession's 100m record at the European Championships in August.
His celebrations also matched his achievement this afternoon, as he ran around the track exuberantly after finding out his winning time.
“It means the world, Paul is a class act, it’s just amazing to follow in his footsteps, and to push the boundaries even more means a lot to me. Hopefully that will continue for the next few years, and other guys will improve as well," said Olatunde after the race.
“We kind of just forget about times, just focused on getting through each round, then getting the win. I knew if I produced my best anything could happen. As I said, I love championships, so to go to Istanbul with a national record, we’ll see what happens.”
