England 0 Nigeria 0 (4-2 on pens): Lionesses survive scare to reach World Cup quarters after tense shootout & James red

Our Girls' gallant effort was not good enough as England booked their place in the World Cup quarterfinals with a nail-biting shootout victory over Nigeria.

The Lionesses survived a tough and grueling extra time period with ten women after Lauren James' red card for stamping on Michelle Alozie.

Georgia Stanway got England off to the worst possible start by firing her pen well wide of the post.

But she was given a huge reprieve when Nigeria missed their first pen of the shootout.

Beth England got the Lionesses up and running with cool, calm, and collected pen straight down the middle.

Michelle Alozie gave the Lionesses the advantage when she blazed her spot kick over the bar.

Rachael Daly took full advantage of Alozie's miss by firing her pen into the roof of the net.

Rasheedat Ajibade found the back of the net with her cool spot kick before Alex Greenwood cooly converted hers.

Christy Ucheibe scored Nigeria's sudden-death pen, putting the pressure back on Chloe Kellly.
