Manchester United have agreed to sign Antony, the Ajax winger, in a deal that could cost them up to £84 million.

The Times understands that negotiations between John Murtough, the United football director, and his Ajax counterparts have finally concluded in an agreement in principle for the transfer.

The transfer window closes on Thursday night and Antony had been determined to push through a move to Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old has missed training over the past ten days and was left out of the Ajax squad for their past two matches.

On Friday, in an interview with the Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Antony accused Ajax of pricing him out of a move to United, but it appears that the Brazil international will now get his wish.

Ajax had been asking for well in excess of €100 million but the Dutch club have now been persuaded to accept a deal worth €95 million as an initial payment and €5 million in add-ons.

That would make Antony the second most expensive signing in United’s history behind Paul Pogba, who cost the club £89 million from Juventus in 2016.

Antony scored 12 goals and set up ten more for Ten Hag’s Ajax side last season. Last week Ten Hag said it was “clear” that he needed more signings.

United have spent £140 million on Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martínez and Christian Eriksen this summer.
