Manchester United failed in an attempt to hijack Borussia Dortmund's bid to sign Nigeria born Red Bull Salzburg forward Karim Adeyemi despite offering the Germany international a huge £150,000 per week, reports claim.

The Red Devils are set to make huge changes to their squad when incoming boss Erik ten Hag leaves Ajax and takes over at Old Trafford this summer, and a new forward will likely be on his list of targets.

But one player United will not be getting through the door is Salzburg starlet Adeyemi - according to German sports reporter Patrick Berger - who says United 'tried to hijack' his move to Dortmund with a 'top offer' of £150,000 per week.

The player turned down that huge salary because he 'always wanted' to link up with the German giants at Signal Iduna Park - with his deal to join the Bundesliga side set to be completed in the coming weeks, he claims.

Adeyemi has emerged as one of the top talents in Europe after a top goalscoring season that has seen him net 21 times in all competitions for Salzburg.

Ten Hag has a shortlist of players he would like to bring to Old Trafford when he officially gets to work during pre-season and is said to have identified three key signings he can trust to begin his reign.

With the future of Cristiano Ronaldo up in the air, Edinson Cavani set to leave and Marcus Rashford underperforming, a new striker should be one of his priorities to fire his struggling side back to the top of the table.

It comes just weeks after reports claimed Liverpool were in talks to sign Adeyemi in the race to beat Dortmund to his signature - with Jurgen Klopp looking to replace Divock Origi, who is expected to join AC Milan this summer.

But now German outlet Sport1 believe Dortmund have beaten the Reds to his signature after agreeing a £32million deal with Salzburg - with the player set to arrive on a five-year contract.

Dortmund are in desperate need of a regular goalscorer themselves with star man Erling Haaland set to join Manchester City.

Sportsmail reported last month that Pep Guardiola's men will trigger the player's £63m release clause and pay him £500,000 per week, which would make him the Premier League's highest paid star.
