Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has described Mohamed Salah as a “tough cookie” after the forward handed Liverpool a significant boost by indicating that he will be fit for today’s pivotal Premier League match against Arsenal.

Salah has told Klopp that he is ready to train today, having missed the session on Monday because of the foot injury he picked up in the 2-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend.

The striker’s rapid recovery is a sign of his remarkable physical durability and comes with Liverpool able to close the gap on leaders Manchester City to a single point should they win at the Emirates.

“He is a tough cookie,” Klopp said. “We are a bit lucky. It was swollen, painful yesterday. Today a bit less and I got a message before the press conference, Mo is ready to train. We will see how that looks.”

The Liverpool manager followed part of Manchester City’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace on Monday night, which has created a window of opportunity in the title race.

Liverpool travel to the Etihad on April 10 for a crucial fixture against their title rivals, by which time they could be ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side if they beat Arsenal and then Watford. The intention is for Liverpool to keep their foot to the floor.

“I watched it [City] for exactly 65 minutes for analysis reasons,” Klopp said. “I don’t have very often time to watch games in real-time, so I watch back. Crystal Palace did really well but City did really well as well, just didn’t finish situations off. I saw the result and was surprised.

“That is the plan, of course, that we keep being as annoying as possible but we have to win our football games. We are very ambitious and determined to do great stuff but we respect a lot how good they are. We still have ten games to play but there are a few really tough ones, one of them we play tomorrow night.”

As well as Salah’s surprise availability, Klopp has Roberto Firmino fit again, while Diogo Jota, Luis Díaz and Sadio Mané are all in contention too. Ibrahima Konaté, the French centre half signed from RB Leipzig, is also available again after a two-match an absence.
