Former Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov believes the Red Devils should look to sign Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen over Harry Kane, with the Napoli star representing a better long-term option.

United boss Erik ten Hag has reportedly placed the signing of a new striker at the top of the club's recruitment plans this summer, ahead of their likely return to the Champions League.

Berbatov, who joined Man United from Tottenham in a £30million move back in 2008, believes Kane will not make the same move this summer.

Kane has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, with United reportedly willing to pay £80m for the forward, who will have one year remaining on his contract.

Berbatov told Goal that Kane's suitors will have a concern over the England captain turning 30 in July, while suggesting his legacy at Tottenham could make a move away difficult.

The Bulgarian believes United should turn their attentions towards Osimhen, with the 24-year-old having scored 26 goals in 31 matches for Napoli this season.

'You cannot argue with the goalscoring record of Harry Kane,' Berbatov said. 'He is one of the best of his generation in how he scores goals, how he plays the game, how he sees the game. He's unbelievable.

'But the one concern I have is that age, he is [almost] 30 so nobody's getting any younger. And in my mind this is going to be a major concern if someone is going to buy him.

'When you say Spurs, the first thing on my mind is Harry Kane. So that legacy, it's just too big for him to tarnish.

‘It's so difficult because you need someone who's going to score goals, someone who's going to be the right age so he can develop and get better and better and better.

'You have to use him for years to come and in my mind, that is Osimhen.

'This is the type of player I’d like to see for United.’

Kane has enjoyed another fine season for Spurs, scoring 25 goals in all competitions, despite the club's turbulent campaign.

Kane will have one year remaining on his Tottenham contract at the end of this season

The season has seen Kane become both England and Tottenham's record goalscorer, but he will once again miss out on winning the first major silverware of his career.

Kane's pursuit of a trophy could see the forward push for a move away in the summer.

Berbatov's view was recently shared by German legend Lothar Matthaus, who claimed Spurs potential demands of over £100m would put Kane out of their price range due to the lack of resale value.

Matthaus also suggested Bayern turn towards Osimhen or pursue moves for Randal Kolo Muani of Eintracht Frankfurt or Werder Bremen's Niclas Fullkrug.
