It was a mid-week of goals galore as the Nigeria Women Football League NWFL premiership returned after the New Year celebration with matchday 5.

It was a mid-week of goals galore as the Nigeria Women Football League NWFL premiership returned after the New Year celebration with matchday 5.

 
In Lafia, it was a five-goal thriller between Nassarawa Amazons and Confluence Queens with Titilayo Aweda and Chioma Moses grabbing braces for their sides, Nasarawa Amazons, and Confluence Queens respectively. 

It was Chioma that draw the first blood in the 10th minute the homers responded 14 minutes through Aweda.

Opera doubled her effort in the 45th minute giving the away side a 2-1 into the half break.

The homers responded just 10 minutes after the break to even the scoreline.


Both sides pushed for the winner but it was Confluence Queens' Mary Opara that emerged as the hero of the day as she grabbed the winner that ensured they went away with all the 3 points at stake. 


Bayelsa Queens were on a rampage as they regroup for their first game in the new year by smashing Osun Babes by four goals to nil. 

Two goals in each half are what the prosperity girls needed to keep their hope of qualifying for the Super 6 alive in their group. 

Flourish Sebastine opened the floodgates of goals in the 4th minute and it never stops raining as Under 17 sensation Etim Edidiong made it two in the 9th, as the Osun Osogbo girls conceded two goals in the first 10 minutes of the match. 

Mwaka Mupeta and Zainab Olopade waited till the last 10 minutes before inflicting two more goals in the 80th and 84th minute respectively to end the match with a 4-0 thumping against Osun Babes. 


It's another routine victory for Edo Queens as they secured another 3 points on the road by defeating Ibom Angels by 2-0 in Akwa Ibom. 

The Angels from Ibom failed to recover from the two first-half goals from the boot of Rebecca Amuda in the 30th and 39th minute respectively.

The result gave Edo Queens their 4 victories in the campaign to pull away from the chasing crowd in the group Amassing 12 points out of possible 15 points and opening up a 5 points gap between them and Nasarawa Amazons in the second. 


Delta Queens recorded the same scoreline against Naija Ratels in Asaba as Chinaza Ago and Taiwo Afolabi did the damage in the 55th and 80th minute respectively to keep their foot on solid ground and dictating the pace in group A by winning all four matches played so far in the season, the only aide hundred percent win record In the young season.


Abia Angels kept it late as they defeated Adamawa Queens on Wednesday. 


The Angels recorded their second victory of the campaign with a late Nkechi Adams goal to leapfrog Adamawa Queens and moved into the third position on the group B log, having 7 points same with Nasarawa Amazons as both teams were only separated by goal difference. 

Heartland Queens picked their only second point of the campaign when they held the Rivers Angels to a goalless draw. 

The only game that failed to produce any goal on a matchday which say a total of 14 goals scored in 6 matches averaging 2.3 goals per match.


The result left Rivers Angels with 7 points in 4 matches, 3 points behind Bayelsa Queens in second, and 5 points behind group A leader in Delta Queens.

The action continues by next week Wednesday in the league with matchday 6 rounds of matches.

 

The top 3 teams will go into a round-robin format of Super 6 where the winner will be crowned the champions of the 2022/2023 season as well represent the country at the WAFU B regional qualifier of the CAF Women Champions League.
