US Open: Venus and Serena Williams take doubles wildcard
Tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams are set to play doubles together at the US Open after receiving a wildcard, the tournament organisers announced.
Earlier this month, the iconic American duo shared the same side of the net for the first time in four years by teaming up in Cincinnati. In their return, they suffered a three-set defeat to Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns in their opener.
Now, the sisters - who have won 14 Majors together in doubles - are set to make their Grand Slam return by competing at Flushing Meadows.
After Serena officially launched her comeback at the start of the grass season, she and Venus accepted a doubles wildcard into Wimbledon.
Unfortunately, they didn't get to play after Serena picked up a knee issue during her Wimbledon singles first-round match against Maya Joint.
But now, everything is set for the sisters to play their first Grand Slam together since the 2022 US Open.
In late July, Venus kicked off her North American hard-court swing by competing in Washington. In the United States capital, the 46-year-old was asked whether she would love to play with her younger sister at the US Open.
“We would love to, so we’ll see what happens," she said at the time.
Meanwhile, Serena played earlier this week in the US Open mixed doubles event. Teaming up with Carlos Alcaraz, the American/Spanish combination won their opener before losing to Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli in the quarterfinal.
Serena will also not play in this year's US Open singles tournament after deciding not to take one of the wildcards.
The Williams sisters have won two doubles titles together in New York.
