UFC 274: Charles Oliveira strips of title 24 hours to defence bout vs Gaethje

The last-minute weight drama means UFC 274 will no longer have two title defence fights but only one as  Rose Namajunas defends the UFC strawweight title against Carla Esparza.

UFC 274: Charles Oliveira strips of title 24 hours to defence bout vs Gaethje

With just 24 hours to his title defence, at UFC 274, Charles Oliveira has been stripped of his UFC lightweight title as he missed the weight cut for the category by 0.5 pounds.

Oliveira is set to face Justine Gaethje on Saturday for his title defence but he needs to weigh 155 pounds for the lightweight category instead weighs 155.5 pounds in the weigh-in which took place on Friday night, 6 May 2022.

This development renders the title for the lightweight category vacant, hence Oliveira missed out on the opportunity to retain or win the title even if he wins the fight between him and Gaethje on Saturday, May 7, 2022.

The #UFC274 main event will go ahead despite Oliveira missing the weight, but only Justin Gaethje has the opportunity to win the UFC title.

This is the first time a UFC champion has lost their belt after stepping on the scale and missing the weight limit.

The last-minute weight drama means UFC 274 will no longer have two title defence fights but only one as  Rose Namajunas defends the UFC strawweight title against Carla Esparza.

Charles Oliveira is 20-8 with one no-contest in the UFC and is on a 10-fight win streak. Oliveira beat Michael Chandler at UFC 262 to win the UFC lightweight title.

At UFC 269 in December, he beat Dustin Poirier via submission to defend the belt.

It's so unfortunate that Charles has to surrender his title without a fight but to the scale as he lost the battle to make the weight category.
