Following the unceremonious sacking of Steven Gerrard by the Aston Villa hierarchy, a couple of names are already popping up to replace their erstwhile English manager.

Mauricio Pochettino according to various is current bookmakers' favourite for the role, ahead of Michael Beale and Thomas Frank.

There are also insinuations that the West Midlanders are looking the way of Thomas Tuchel as their new manager.

Aston Villa made the decision to part ways with Gerrard following last night's 3-0 defeat at Fulham.

The result leaves Villa 17th in the table, with nine points from their opening 11 matches.

The Birmingham outfit have won just two league outings this term, against Everton and Southampton. They were beaten 2-0 by Cherries on the opening day of the season.

Gerrard led Villa to a 14th-placed finish last term, but had been expected to push the Midlands club higher up the table in the new campaign.

Now though, the ex-Liverpool and England midfielder finds himself out of work, having joined the club in November 2021, following a successful spell in charge of Rangers.

A statement from the club read: “Aston Villa football club can confirm that head coach Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect.

“We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”

Gerrard is the fourth manager to lose their job in the top flight this season, following the dismissals of Scott Parker, Thomas Tuchel and Bruno Lage from Cherries, Chelsea and Wolves respectively.
