January 2022 transfer spending was £760M worldwide, with English teams spending three times more than every club outside of Europe combined, and Brazil supplying the most players to the international market (Mail Online)

3,534 deals were completed worldwide in January, according to FIFA. (Mail Online)

Recruitment by English clubs included, Colombian winger Luis Diaz, 25, who moved from Porto to Liverpool for £37.5M, a fee which could rise to £50M; Manchester City signed Argentine striker Julian Alvarez, 22, from River Plate for £21M and Newcastle United secured Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes, 24, from Lyon for £33M. The world’s biggest spenders were officially English clubs, which laid out £258M, followed by Italian sides on £84M and then Spanish teams on £82M. Total European spending was £685M. (Mail Online)

This compared with the total transfer spending outside of Europe, with in the North American, South American, Asian, African, and Australasian football confederations spending just £74M between them. (Mail Online)

The money spent by English clubs resulted in 153 players being registered in the country in January. Brazil registered 201, Portugal 194 and Spain 175. (Mail Online)

In the women's game, a total of 257 international player transfers were completed in January 2022, up from 180 (43 per cent) in 2021. (Mail Online)
